Come Support and Applaud the Arrival of the Clean Energy Walkers to Central Vermont
On January 12th, the Clean Energy Walkers will arrive at LACE, the Local Agricultural Community Exchange in Barre, at 159 North Main Street. All are welcome and invited to join them at 6PM for a community pot-luck, and stay for a presentation at 7 to hear what inspired them to walk 126 miles through the Vermont winter. They will bring stories of their interactions with Vermonters along the route, and what they plan to share with legislators the following day at the Statehouse.
The historic walk will have carried citizens of Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire along a winding, mid-winter path for 12 days starting January 2nd, 2010. Their message: to replace the VT Yankee nuclear reactor with safer and more affordable energy sources. As you know, in the next Vermont legislative session, representatives may vote on the issue of the Vermont Yankee nuclear reactor’s continued operation in southern Vermont. Walkers will hand-deliver formal messages of support for changing the way New Englanders make and use energy to members of the Vermont legislature.
Musical events, potlucks suppers and forums are also planned in towns along the walk route; VT route 5 from Brattleboro to White River Jct and VT route14 to Montpelier. The public is invited to these free events.
People will end their journey at the Vermont Statehouse on January 13th. At noon, they will deliver their message of support for a clean energy future to legislators and the public.
Citizens are invited to join the walk at any point and for any distance along the path. Food, lodging, and logistical support will be provided for walkers. Everyone is invited to share in this historic shift onto a safer, cleaner and more affordable energy path.
People can learn more about walking and offer support by calling event organizer, Bob Bady at (802) 258-7750 or by writing to safeandgreenwalk@gmail.com. A complete walk schedule and the walk story is available at www.safeandgreencampaign.org.
This event is sponsored by Safe and Green Campaign and by Vermont Yankee Decommissioning Alliance.
